Hydrology and Hydraulics Study Project History

May 2022

CBCC is happy to announce that, as part of our award from the FEMA Hazard Mitigation Grant Program, this spring we have hired Watershed Consulting Associates, LLC (Watershed Consulting) to assist us with our very important work– protecting Coral Bay and keeping its lands and waters beautiful and thriving.  For the next several months we will be working closely with Watershed Consulting to advance a Hydrologic and Hydraulic (H&H) study in Coral Bay with the goal of developing feasible and cost-effective solutions to stormwater flooding problems. H&H studies focus on the movement of water through watersheds and this information will help us to create structures and plans which will improve our roadways with better stormwater management that works with our natural drainage guts.

The H&H Study in Coral Bay will be focused on the main watershed area which includes portions of Route 10, Route 20, Route 107 & 108, as well as Johnny Horn Trail (Route 109).  A significant goal of the study is identifying key drainage ways “from Ridge to Reef” that cross public roads and flagging potential improvements to reduce stormwater hazards both on public roads and lands or private lands.

Roadway improvement is getting more and more important with a lot of new construction going on up in the hills surrounding Coral Bay. New construction often contributes to our runoff and erosion problems, so we are working to provide the best, most feasible and cost effective mitigation strategies to keep our roads clear and safe even after heavy rains.  When the designs are done, they will help the Department of Public Works, Department of Planning and Natural Resources and private individuals make better decisions when constructing new roads and improving existing roadways.
